V-Tail Quad Scratch Build
« on: May 17, 2013, 10:45:09 PM »
Well after crashing my QAV400 I thought I would try a scratch build whilst Im waiting for spares to be shipped. Was originally going to build a H quad but always wanted to try a TRI too however put off by servo and tilt mechanism so settled on a V-Tail quad. I already had the ply, the other bits came to about £15, £10 of which is the 2 lengths of aluminium section used. Im going to fit the electrics tomorrow and run it on the KK2.0

Neat! ... but don't be too put off by a servo tilt mechanism. Should you ever want to try a Tri, then the Turnigy Talon Tricopter Integrated Tail Servo Mount Set with a TGY-306G-HV High Voltage Ultra Fast/High Digital Servo and a Blade 400 thrust bearing will give you a solid yaw mechanism. (the thrust bearing is the key. The 306G servo isn't as robust as the 306G-HV)

Ben , watching with interest. Fancy a go at one of these myself. Some details on dims and construction method would be really good when you know it works :-)

Specs :

Weight 823grams or with 4s 2650mah lipo 1120grams, 10min hover in garden and put back 1871mah into the lipo which is 70%

Overall length of frame is 472mm, Width of front aluminum section is 600mm, flat section on rear is 72mm then each 30deg slanted piece is 129mm each. Measurement between front motor shafts is 558mm, between rear motor shafts at prop level is about 270mm, between front and rear is about 485mm, whether any of this is right is yet to be proved in flight.

Aluminum box section is from b&q and is 10mmx10mmx1mm thick x 1m long for about £5, angle is 14mmx14mm and costs about a fiver too, centre section is 10mmx10mm wood and 4mm ply top and bottom however there is a little flex if I twist the front end across the back whilst holding the rear, I may yes replace the 4mm ply for 6mm or change the 10mm wood for 10mm aluminium or it may just be fine as it is :)
