Hi people, I want a cheap long range control. I plan on buying a 1W 2.4 vtx from hobbyking but i know it'll not be compatible with me using 2.4 on my turnigy 9x

by cheap, i don't mean nasty. but any ideas greatfully received

500mw is more than enough, personally I would be wary that 1w would interfere with other equipment

value LR control ... Id go for rangelink from sid @ rcgoups fpv section (not sure if he has a store)

The fatsharks are MrBen's old ones, I bought them off him a month ago or so.

perfect working order, new eye-foam (i removed that previous eye foam and fully cleaned the fatsharks with alcohol wipes before applying new foam) and spare eye foam brand new in bag

comes with brand new all-in-one AV/Power cable too.

Only reason I bought other goggles was that I wanted to be "wire free" when flying the quad. didn't fancy having to lug my whole tripod GS around when I just wanted a little bash-about.

Oh, and the brightness adjust button isnt there, but the mini-joystick thing it attaches to is still present and the switch is still perfectly useable.

it came from Ben like that.

Cheap and long range..... This is how I have gone about doing it.

you already have a turnigy 9x, first thing to do is flash it to ER-9x (you can thank me later.... trust me it makes it an amazing radio)
second thing buy OpenLRS, if you get it direct from Flytron its very cheap.  Mihai AKA Theundead has made some great firmwares for it.  also the 7Watt booster is cheap!!

for video I bought a 5.8Ghz 250mW and I already get 2.2Km with just clover leaf and skew planar wheel (thats on the ground)  I have a 7 turn helical antenna for my tracking and I didnt even need it to get that far.  I would say 5-10km in the air is expected from my video and once I find the limit there is always the 500mW Video Tx.  the OpenLRS who knows the limits but with the booster its at least as far as all the others at a fraction of the cost and it will fit on the turnigy 9x radio.

Just my 2 pennies worth, it is cheap and you will go for miles if setup well :)

Thanks papa_lazerous

I already flashed the firmware of my 9x to ER9x, it's got so many more features now :)

I'll need some help when it comes to converting the 9x to LRS, how easy is it? and am I still able to use the built in 2.4ghz radio when I'm just LOSing around?

How far are you guys actually lying with UHF systems?

From looking around it seems that a good 35mhz RX will give you 2-3 miles? Or am I just kidding myself?

I've got a Zeph2 being built.... Don't want to get a UHF system just yet but hoping a RP8D1 will give me good range to start with.

Its not practical to use the 9x for LRS and 2.4Ghz but it can be done.

The problem is your antenna is ontop of the radio, and your module at the back as a wire running from it to the antenna so cant actually be removed without cutting the cable....  If you where to remove the antenna and then get a sma female connector and mount it to the module itself you could have your antenna on the module and be able to literally unclip the module and then when flying uhf fasten in the OpenLRS module. (you wouldnt want the OpenLRS antenna and a 2.4Ghz anteanna sat beside each other as one would absorb power from the other and kill your range)  I assume you are using the standard turnigy module??  I have the Tx module and an Rx that came with the radio that I will never use thats going spare...  The OpenLRS is a Futaba style so its too narrow for the slot and you need an adaptor but thats no biggy, I have semi permenantly fixed mine to the 9x to avoid anything coming off during flight.

I think the best thing would be for me to post some pictures this evening when I am home from work.   That will give you an idea of setup and whats involved

Ive had over 8k on 35mhz, but I use only Futaba on PCM (no glitches), ppm should go as far but you may get some glitches
