xxpitt: but the solder just wouldn't melt on one of the pins proper wrecked the board trying to get it to melt

I had the same issue, took me ages to get that thing off!

I'm guessing all the flat solder points are earth's. They all seem  to be anyway. Anything without a green trace around it.

Thanks Martin.  Any tips for desolate ring that earth pin? Might do my other bra tonight. I was using copper braid to mop up the solder but that earth pin just wasn't having it.

Where did you get the filters from Dave?

Anyone actually seen an improvement after changing the filter? I mean (noticeable) improvement.

Got them from rmrc  like $3 each but to buy a rx  with it already installed takes the price from $40 to $75 I understand why now after trying to get tho old fliter out. Apparently you get a 3dbi gain

I tested them when doing first ones years ago. they do improve sensitivity of the receiver , and make the less prone to interference in noisy environments, for instance getting tiny horizontal lines on lower channals on std one and the switching to one with upgraded filter and not getting those lines being most noticeable

Dave I desolder with braid and pump and then heat pins with iron and push each pin in turn, so as not to lift and traces , you have to slightly bend heatsinks on other side to get em out sometimes and bent back but easy done

its not realy a hard job just fiddly

this is how I do it but less cowboy like :)

YeaHey was using copper braid but don't have a pup.  He actually done a much  better job than me. Was just that one pin. The solder wasn't melting or being taken by the braid. Will do my other one tonight see if I can do a better job of it. Maybe even take some pics and shame myself

To get the old solder to melt off, using some flux helps enormously. flux in the braid and fresh flux again on the pins that are still attached. Not plumbers flux of course, that's got to much acid in it!

Big Iron, works good too. Short time with a hot iron is better than a long time with a moderate iron

Yeah I have no flux, shame on me. Keep meaning to get some but I'm a lazy tight arse. I use the solder with a resin core. Think its meant  to act like flux. But will get some next time I see some
