What to build
«

Hello.
Im going to put together a quadrocopter.
I was looking for hardware i could use for that. But first what i want to achieve :
15 minutes of stable flight at least,
2km of range (fpv and link)
OSD of course,
gps
And here is what i picked for that task:
2216-800kV Turnigy multistar motors
HobbyKing blue series 30A ESC
Multiwii 328P FC
Ublox Neo-6M GPS
propellers APC SlowFly 8047 or 9"
Lipo... im thinkng about 4000mAh 4s 20C ... x2 maybe? its like 400 grams for one Lipo
so it depends if 2 lipos& 800g in total would fly longer than one lipo&400grams
FPV skyzone 5.8GHz 600mW set
FatShark PilotHD 720p camera
and frame made of aluminium profiles + G10 laminate centerplate (i think?) or H-copter frame made of carbon fiber pipes
turnigy 9x as its realiable for beginners
Any suggestions ? How to improve this set w/o spending more money on that?

Hi Macck, if your using the 2216 800kv motors you will need to use a bigger prop probably at least a 10x4.5, 8 and 9 inch props are better with higher kv motors lower kv motors = bigger props.
The esc should be ok and the ublox gps is good but I have never used a multiwii 328p fc it might be a bit of work getting it set up and flying well with the gps and there are other flight controllers that are much more plug and play.
the 4000mah 4s battery could get you 15 minutes if you keep the quad nice and light,
I have never gone any distance with 5.8Ghz but have seen plenty of videos of people going 2km and more
The 9x is a good radio I have flown many quads with one.
Are you planning on building your own frame ? have you flown anything fpv before ? it will help us point you in the right direction if we know what experience you have of flying.

yeah agree with the props, 9inch might just be ok but if your after flight times you want the biggest you can fit on there that the motors will run ok, 10-11 will be about right. i like the f-30a esc's but sure they will do ok, blue series is hobbykings rebranded mystery esc's. never used them but just got some 12a ones for mini quad. as for the other stuff not really in a position to comment as have no experience with it

The naze or naza would be better than the multi wii no?
Not sure iv'e seen a quad of any sort with x2 lipos, sounds heavy.
Might as well get the turnigy 9xr as opposed to the 9x Backlit LCD amongst a few other improvements.
Osd will depend On what sort of stuff You want displayed. I have a Tiny osd 3 .. Lots of on screen info though You can change between simple mode and back and didnt cost the earth. No Return to home function though.

So I was training quadrocopter flights on small beetle but nothing FPV yet so I can say I have some sort of skill in flying really unstable piece of machinery but well, im not really experienced.
So you say 10x4.5 props okay.
I need to fit in budget so I put everything into cart on hobby king including 2x4000 zippy flightmax, but without TX/RX & telemetry for turnigy 9x, propellers and the frame and without these components I want to spend about 420$ to buy :
- motors
- ESC's
- FC
- Turnigy 9x
- Skyzone 600mW TX/RX 5,8GHz FPV system
- Fatshark PilotHD 720p HD FPV camera
- Neo-6M GPS module
- 2x Lipos
- some sort of mini OSD or whatever
( id like to have startpoint - current point distance on screen, RSSI, arrow pointing where is Home, coordinates, and % of the battery or voltage, also "return home" would be nice, because you never know what happens )
And about frame size... accualy i dont know but i think at least 500mmx500m square X or something like this (picture from person who is making these frames and sells them, they weight only 200grams

Cyclops storm osd might be work a look then.. If RTH is required I was recommended this lately when thinking of upgrading to OSD with RTH Functionality. Seems cheapest option
Don't quote me one this but I think that Fat shark flight cam is rubbish.

If you are going 4S then you will need 4S capable ESC's and Motors!
If running on 3S then the minimum props would be 10X4.5, you might get away with 9" on 4S, would be inclined to stay with 10" min though.
How much reading, hacking, setting up are you prepared to do? OSD isn't vital on a multi, return to home can be useful but not something to rely on, and only some Flight controllers support GPS! Think naze is very experimental, KK2 no, multiWii think its a bit iffy. APM will do all and cheap but a bit of setting up to do although the apm Planner has made this a dawdle now!
There are more expensive Flight controllers or OSD's with return to home feature, EagleTree is modular and (expensive), ezOSD has a return home arrow (but not RTH) and I like the display, it's gps takes a long time to get a fix though!
15mins plus is quite possible but maybe stretching it a bit on 4000mAh, will need to keep it light,--- or just build it out of wood and alluminium sq tube and have fun, you will crash, think about something that is easy to repair! Oh and get spare props, plenty of them!

Accualy if i had all the equipment needed im prepared to do a lot of work and thats not a problem. Now im just trying to figure out the best possible equipment for the price :-)
Okay im at this point now
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ae8lkrl3abjoeq4/hk.png?dl=0
(Each time i change something the $ is going up... but since just have to make this possible, ill try to buy some stuff in peroids so it wont hurt my pocket this much)
And im thinking about 1048 propellers...
as ecalc.ch calcuated this set for 9 minutes of continuus flight at full speed
average 15 minutes
and hanging for 20 minutes
Still i would like to increase that value.
Calculated maximum speed is 22 mph, and accualy id like somehow to tweak it a bit to at least 27-28 mph

you may want to add a lipo or 2, one just isn't enough really. also i'm guessing all this is from the international warehouse? if so alot of people have been stung with import charges lately, also even if they would mark it down, you can only mark it down to 10% of the net value so that would put it to $46 which is still over the price they let it pass by customs

The mobius is great for Recording HD footage but are you going to fly FPV through that alone? A $30 board cam like the 650tvl or 600tvl would most certainly be better.

Apparently direct channel is the best shipping option to choose. Though you need to get the value down to 20 bucks. So maybe break it up into 2 orders, but people have been saying they've been getting charged either way
