Turnigy 9XR or keep my DX7?
« on: August 06, 2013, 06:03:22 AM »
Hi all, I have a Spektrum DX7 which is about 5 years old. Should I sell it and get the 9XR with the Orange DSM2 module for my BNF stuff and the FrSky combo for everything else?

The only reason I am considering this is because I getting more and more in to FPV and the FrSky gear gets some fantastic reviews, far outperforming the DX7 for range and signal robustness!
Also the 9XR would be easier for me to use a long range system with at a later date.

I will be grateful for any advice.

Id keep my Dx7 for LOS and buy a 9xr for FPV, as they aren't very expensive, and feel rather cheap.

Or sell the dx7 and get a Taranis as they are more expensive but a lot better quality than the 9xr.

if you can afford it, get a taranis by frsky.
If you can't afford it, then a 9xr is a good alternative, easily upgradable to LRS in the future too, plus the dsm2 module is cheap so you won't lose the ability to fly your bnf planes

I've been really happy with my 9xr. It has the frsky module and I've also boosted the signal with a 1w wifi booster. Granted the quality isn't as good as my JR 11x but its not half bad and it means I can fly fpv in places where I would rather not take my 11x. I've heard some issues on quality so im not sure if I just happened to get a good un but I honestly couldn't ask for more from a cheap radio.

Thanks for all the comments so far, some very helpful information is coming in. I am swinging towards the 9XR a little more now, especially after looking at some reviews that have been done but not fully decided yet!

Think I will wait for the Taranis, will probably wait until the new year now. Thanks for all the advice.

The taranis came into stock today at Giantshark. Apparently they got 70 in, and they are going fast...

Anybody heard anything bad about the Taranis? The only negative I have heard is that they are very difficult to get hold of, they sell before they hit the shelves.

I actually prefer ed 9xr to bens taranis. Sticks seem to light for me. 9xr has more resistance in them. But only problem is the pots aren't very accurate. When my throttle is 0 ruder is 0 but then put throttle up to 50% and rudder goes to -5. Not great be you can live with it. Might just be my 9xr others might be ok

Obviously taranis is loaded with a lot more features and is built better. But you won't go too far wrong with a 9xr either

I wouldn't touch a 9xr, you get what you pay for with it.

you can adjust the springs inside the taranis to make it stiff or light ;) ... its a no brainer to me, the 9xr is a piece of shit, thought that from day1 (no offence to 9xr owners) prior to 9xr I had a JR PCM9X, DX7s, DX7 & a DX6
