Ben, I think you're used to good quality equipment so the 9XR being a "budget" transmitter is still below your usual standard of quality.

I started with E-Sky transmitters (the ones you get with the honeybee FP), then one of those crappy T9 "computer" radios that you get with the cheap RTF 450 clones. Best Radio I've ever used is the Turnigy 9X, so for people like me I reckon the 9XR would "feel" better.

I'd say spend a little more and get a decent transmitter, it's the main part of your flying rig so why not get a good one.

so why not get a good one.

because lets be fair here... not everyone can afford one.

The money saved buying a 9XR over a Taranis would easily be enough to build an entire FPV quad, or buy a PNF Radjet and a cheap FPV setup for it, and so on... I think what I'm really trying to say is that the functionality of a 9XR is perfectly sufficient for such applications where a guy on a budget wants to experience FPV.

Many of us have to be really careful with what we spend the money on so we can maximise our experience in the hobby. It would be great to have an expensive transmitter (believe me, the cost of a Taranis would take up 2 months worth of what I'm allowed to spend on this hobby) but it would also be great to have something to fly with it.

Fair point Chris, but I still think the 9xr is a bad choice and he is better off keeping the dx7.

Ohhhh and I have to be careful with my money too but I've learned from experience buy cheap buy twice. Scrimping doesn't pay off.

I agree that the DX7 is probably a better transmitter than the 9XR for regular LOS RC, but it's not very FPV friendly in terms of the range it offers and the programmability of all the switches/buttons etc.

I stand by my first comment in the thread "if you can afford it, get a taranis"

if one can't afford a taranis, the 9XR is perfectly acceptable, especially if you keep the DX7 for LOS.

Everyone's experiences are different and scrimping paid off for me :) My old skool Turnigy 9X has been the most used and reliable bit of FPV/RC related equipment I've bought in the last 3 years. It was a great budget TX to get into the hobby with it's built in 2.4 and it has also done me proud by working with all the RF modules/systems I've used it with (3 x UHF systems and the FrSky 2.4 gear) and has all the buttons, dials, switches I've ever needed for FPV.

I prefer the saying "If you're buying cheap... buy smart" ;)

only if they're not the same as mine ;)

nah, only messin. sorry if I sound like i'm coming off too aggressive. just trying to give a balanced view on things. I wouldn't like a newbie to read our forums and think they can't get into fpv unless they have hundreds and hundreds to spend on it. Trying to keep it attractive to all wallet thicknesses. didn't mean to offend.

Lol I was only messing with you Chris, totally understand. If you did buy a 9xr would you also have to buy the frsky module if you were going to use frsky receivers?

I just successfully got orange openlrs to operate via the trainer port on my DX6i the ppm signal emited there is good to go just hook it up to the lrs at the correct pin then find a way to power the lrs TX. (I used the battries in the DX6i)

Thats another option. I was having the same delema. I have five planes now that I love to fly line of sight and didn't wan't a new TX but neded more range for my one FPV plane.

My build with pictures.

Right then, Taranis ordered this morning. Along with a DSMx/2 module for my small BNF stuff and two telemetry 8ch rx's for FPV on my Quadcopter and my wing.
Will post my initial thoughts when it arrives. Computers are not my thing so I am hoping that the operating system is straight forward.
Does anyone know where to download the CompanionTX program. Apparently it has a Taranis simulator on it to get used to the programing.
