CorporalB's Turnigy 9x UHF conversion (OpenLRS)
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:56:27 PM »
Now that my Diamond TX antenna has arrived, I decided it was time to install my OpenLRS system into my Turnigy 9x.

First I had to remove the existing 2.4ghz module, which is as easy as unscrewing a few screws and snapping off the pigtail from the RF module inside the little grey box:

I have no use for this module anymore as I have an FrSky 2.4ghz module on the way complete with RX and telemetry.

I attached the Booster to the OLRS Tx module using double sided sticky foam tape (best foam tape I've ever used, from poundland):

Using the same tape, I attached the Futaba--->JR adapter from flytron, to the OLRS Tx module:

And then simply slot into the module bay at the back of the 9x (held into place with velcro).
I hacksawed a small hole in the battery cover to allow a servo connector to poke through, feeding the voltage regulator:

And here's the end product :)

Did a quick range test, although I didn't have time to travel somewhere with a wide open space, so I reckon 1km through trees, buildings, walls and behind hills is quite good. Especially as my TX was on a bench in the garden and the RX was inside my car :)

This is the new 2.4ghz system I've ordered for when I want to fly models LOS or just close by on 5.8ghz video gear

I'm not exactly up to speed on JR transmitters (i.e. if they have different size module slots, i'd guess they're all standard) but this is for JR transmitters originally but can be used in the 9x also :)

What will yours be for Ben?

This system has:

1. receiver programmable failsafe
2. built in rssi telemetry downlink (tx module beeps at low rssi)
3. true diversity RX with 2 x antenna
4. up to 2 x the range of standard built in turnigy 9x 2.4ghz module

I may get another electric helictopter 450-600 size later this year, also my 5 years old really badly wants to fly planes like his daddy, may get him a slowstick or something.

also, i got it wrong. this RX is not capable of 2 way communication so no rssi, but the tx module is compatible with the D8FR rx which is the 2 way version of this rx
