New TV Format FPV
« on: March 19, 2015, 04:02:08 PM »
Hi everyone,
My name is Martin Campbell and I work for the television production company, Remedy Productions.
We are swatting up on the world of FPV drone racing, looking for potential contributors etc for a new television format we are developing.  We’re keen to hear about any upcoming events and chat about your experience and expertise.
Any time you could spare would be much appreciated, and if you have any questions for me you can feel free to ask away.
The existing footage online of races are spectacular; like a Star Wars Pod Race at times (probably the best thing to come out of The Phantom Menace  ;) )
If you feel like this is something you would be able to chat to me about I would really appreciate it.  I’ve left my contact details below.
Kind regards,
Martin.

If you need to know anything specific just ask On here sure someone will have the answer. The biggest problem I guess you will face is as you looking to televise it i guess you would have to keep all the gear legal meaning 25mw 5.8ghz vtx's. And the range would be pretty poor. Might be ok for a small circuit though

Hi xxpitt

Thanks for the advice.  I think if we had the circuit in a private building/ certified location (with completed risk assessment etc.) then some of the rules regarding legal gear might be different.  Part of the format might involve teams building their Dream Drone - think Robot Wars (I say might as we are still very much in the development stage).
What we would do is find and cast various FPV teams from around the UK and they could compete in the best drone race in the world.
With a television budget we would have all the whistles and bells: multi camera coverage, sets, challenges, presenters etc.

We will continue our research from the office and we would love to speak to anyone who would like to share their experience and expertise.

Thanks again,
Martin.

I can't see how being in the tv industry that you would be granted different laws than the rest of the UK citizens are expected to abide by! Although that doesn't seem to bother some, Like for instance the Gadget show where they were filming flying down a street! A really good example to kids buying toy drones, like the Phantom crap. The damage that its doing to real aero Modelling is irreversible...

You'll have some huge hurdles to overcome
CAA regulations for commercial use (ouch, ruddy nightmare and each pilot would need to be licensed)
Many more obstacles

Good luck though would love to see a well informed program about it

I'm sure there are other ways to deal with vtx in an indoor environment , and a tv show would be very cool , Drone racing would be a very cool sport and gr8 for spectators being able to see what each pilot sees

I agree there maybe quite a few problems to get round when your setting it all up but its a great idea and you wouldn't be short of people interested in flying and building. Mini quad racing is definetly gonna get bigger and bigger.  Like xpitt said if you need some test pilots  ;D

Hmmm yes, first tip:
To keep production costs from going through the roof it might be advisable to make sure each pilot has at least 3 mii quads ready to fly, crashes are guaranteed every minute, downtime on repairs would be mad if a crew is being paid for sitting around the costs would be mad too

Hi Everyone,

We've had an illuminating day.  There must be something in the ether because another production company have been developing the same idea we have been and have beat us to it.
The show is called Air Heads and should be on BBC 2 in the near future.  Keep your eyes peeled for it, I'm sure you'll all enjoy it.
Thanks again for all comments, tips and feedback though everyone, much appreciated!

Have a great weekend.
Martin.

Yup already new about that by SO tv. Coronation street and east enders still both run though. No reason you can't do a better version
