Best legal long range setup
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:28:09 PM »
Since lots of our clients want to fly short to medium range on legal power we where looking for better antenna solutions. In our antenna lab we developed a new series of antennas

For the transmitter side we came with a dome antenna. This antenna differs from all other circular polarized antennas because it delivers roughly double the gain but the pattern is still spherical. With 5.6dBi and the omni directional transmitting/ receiving pattern its the best antenna around for transmitter and short-range receiver.

If you need more range use our micro helix antenna. At this moment available in 7.6, 9 and 11.1 dBi
Both antenna types come in left or right polarization pattern. Till now we already fly 4km out on just 25 mW and the standard monitor receiver.

For more information and pricing go to our website http://www.birds-eye-view.nl/product-category/transmitters-receivers-and-antennas/antennas/ For those who want to try them we offer a 7.5% discount on both the dome and the micro helix antennas. Use this coupon for 7.5% discount;"antenna" (use the word antenna as discount code without filling in the "  "

What's the point in using legal power to fly illegally? In for a penny in for a pound

Yes there is a certain irony in attempting medium distance on legal power, it's illegal!

Not an advocate of over sensitive receivers, etc, just decent power = decent reception, at least on 5.8 and is still only short range!

He guys,
legal or not legal depends on local regulations. For instance here in the Netherlands a hobbyist can fly officially within line of sight. That means that you can fly up to 2 km distance before you loose your platform out line of sight.
In my country 5.8 GHz is aloud for video transmission up to 25mW. We already did some testing up to 4 km which is completely legal (as long as you still see your plane) So for my bigger fpv models I now have enough legal range.

Keep in mind that our dome antenna is very unique. As far as I know there are no other fpv antennas around with this gain and a which are fully omnidirectional. This antenna doubles the range in comparison with a cloverleaf or similar antenna.

Especially for countries like germany where the fine is very high if you are using to much transmitting power its a good idea to buy better antennas instead of more transmitting power.

So in my opinion it is always a good idea to invest in better antennas even if you dont fly long range. With the right equipment you can increase your video quality enormous and that is what counts.

It's 25mW throughout Europe! Don't think there are any exceptions.

Where did you dream up 2km?
In most countries it is the authorities that decide what constitutes line-of-sight distance, and in most cases is stated as 0.5km. I don't believe that you (or any one else) can safely fly at 2km distance!

Even my 2.4m Super Skysurfer vanishes beyond 1km, well at least for any kind of orientation, if you've kept it in sight you can stil just about make out the dot at 1200m if the air is perfectly clear

@Bigmouse,
hobbyist can fly here as long as they can see their plane. So under optimal circumstances most models disappear after 1 to 2 km (and yes its a very small dot in the sky then) Professional users are aloud to fly up to 500 meter or even more with an extended observer.
My bigger fpv planes with more then 4.5 meter wingspan are good to fly and spot over this distance. About 25mW yes you are properly right that its aloud in most countries. But since i don't know all rules from all surrounding countries I didn't claim that.

@xxpitt,
I just want to show that with the right material you can fly legal during most fpv flights. And yes there are people around who do illegal things. But on the high way there are also people who drive to fast. I only want to show that its possible to get enough video range out of legal equipment. Especially for countries like Germany this makes lots of sense since the fines are there very high.

So its up to you if you do things save and legal or not. I just want to say that we invented a new antenna which can keep our hobby save and legal. Dont forget that in some countries the guys who are doing illegal things with their fpv equipment makes it impossible for others to do their hobby.
So in my opinion its good to show governments that we follow the law and invent new products to do our hobby as save as possible. People who don't think about this can ruin the whole fpv and rc model community with their actions.
Here in Holland I show governments that it can be done safely and that we do everything to prevent accidents. And that helps. The Dutch government is now very helpful and guess what we get some extra rights this year because we showed them that we have an excellent safety record.
Hope you understand my point that its always better to keep your equipment top notch to prevent accidents. Since our video link is one of the most important things to keep control you should never under estimate the difference between a very good video reception and a poor one.

But you have to decide for your self how others think about our hobby. When enough people say that they don't want "drones" anymore because of safety and privacy issues then I think that there is a change that they forbit  it. So try to act and fly as safe as possible. We are relatively new in the air and we have to proof them that we can get an excellent safety record to.

But you have to make this decision for you self in your own country of course.

You can use these antennas with more power to to get more range. If its legal or not depends on HAM licences and local regulations. using our products can both be done the legal and the non legal way. Its all up to you.

But how far do you want to fly? I can calculate what power you need to get the range based on our antennas and standard receiver of lets say 91dbm sensitivity. (90 a 91 dbm is average for most monitors with build in receiver, iftron has little more)

Keep in mind that if you want to try them that I placed a discount coupon here on the site.
