RepG Dual Nozzle £449 - Should I?
« on: January 17, 2015, 11:19:39 AM »
I love opensoure and have always been intrigued with the ReplicatorG.

There is one on the fleabay with a dual nozzle, and 6000000 man hours of building for £449.

Should I? The resolution seems good, but I hear it just lacks the speed compared to other printers.

Anything else I should look out for? £500 would be my limit - I can't save, I tried, and I'll just go out and buy clothes or other toys...

It's hard to do real comparisons as I only have had experience with one!

In my mind absolutely vital is: Open source.
Almost essential: heated table
Highly desirable: Ability to print PLA and ABS (some will only will print PLA)

You will need to do some forum reading! I have read that rerap is not ideal, and they have also gone closed source, but I can't substantiate this!

I've been reading a bit but then you get a lot of Fan boys who will overpower their opinions, so it's difficult to make a choice.

Can I ask which one you went for?

The one in question for me prints ABS, PLA , PVA, Nylon with the universal extruder included.

It also has a heated platform and Z axis goes down to 0.1mm.

Choices.. Too many haha.

I chose an Ultimaker2 main reasons were, I wanted a working printer! I have too many half finished things around here!

Needed to be open source!
It was the only printer I could find where I couldn't find any bad reports about it!
The UM2 is pricey, Although you might consider the Ultimaker original (half the price), and add a heated table, it prints as good as the UM2 and can be obtained as a kit.

These sell a range in the uk, It will give you some idea  http://www.dream3d.co.uk/

Although mine goes down to 0.04mm layer thickness, I can't see any sensible reason (yet) to go below 0.1mm, and will often use 0.15 or 0.2 if I can get away with it!

Second nozzle can cost up to £200 extra depending on printer, No use for me (don't want or need to print in dual colours) but could be really handy sometime soon when there is a good soluble filament available which can be used for supporting the print, think this is the next major advancement needed!

This guy will give you a non biased view of his top ten printers of 2014
