TBS Caipirinha - unsure :-|
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:17:21 PM »
For reasons I can't fathom, yesterday I developed the need to have another FPV plane in my hangar. I already have a X6 and Skyhunter but have yet to fly either of them. The X6 is built and ready, just needs electronics setup and tuning; Skyhunter in part built. The reason I haven't finished or flown them is lack of desire and I think this is because my style of FPV is low proximity stuff. Something I've done all year with my QAV400 and now doing more than ever with my Spanky. I guess I know if I take the X6 to do that sort of thing it's gonna end up in the bin straight away.

So this is where the Caipirinha comes in, or does it?

I've flown pretty much everything and some of my most enjoyable time has been with a flyingwings Raven hammering feet of the deck. But that's the old days of LOS and now I'm 98% FPV. One of the things I liked about the raven is it's size and just being able to pop it in the boot, go off to do some work and know I can head out flying on my way home. Something my quad's all offer. So I reckon I'd be better off with a 30-35" wing that can take a few knocks along the way without major rebuild.

I've scoured the web forums and the Caipirinha seems to be very popular and to be honest it's hard to find anything similar that people seem to shout out about. Have I missed something? Just to point out also, I'm never keen on buying TBS stuff. Kind of against the grain.

I'd really appreciate some advice and opinions before I hit the buy button.

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick, I think the hobbyking teksumo has to be worth a look I have just built one as my first ever plane\wing before that I had just flown quads and heli's. I looked around for a while for something that you could fly low proximity style and venture a bit further out with as well, that could take a good few hits and keep flying and the best I could find was either a teksumo or an assassin. Mine has taken some massive hits, full throttle nose in to the ground a few times and today through a tree snapping branches before bouncing off the floor and it still keeps going. Gonna put some vids up soon as soon as I find a good way to mount the Möbius. Loads of vids and build threads about Mine is on here. Also check out the crash test hobbies pinata that looks a great wing but only available in USA I think.

Must admit the Teksumo crossed my mind as my mate put FPV gear on his. He managed to crash land in the sea with a unprotected GP3 on board! Apparently he stripped to his pants and jumped in to rescue it :o I know he wasn't a fan of it with FPV but you have got me thinking. I happen to have some CTH wings in the attic that might work. God I even have a Grim Reaper laying around in my back garden which is a failed FPV project from last year. I couldn't get it to fly at all but then I believe I overloaded it so it stood no chance. I suppose I was over doing the setup trying to get a full Eagle Tree setup with a big 3s 4000 pack on board, think AUW was about 1800g!

So now I'm sat here thinking the Caipirinha would be an easy build but should I have another go at the Reaper? I also have a part built Assassin, do I have a go at that? Hmmm... :-\

Flying wings don't like heavy wing loadings! For fpv you either need a big wing or build it light!

I got a bit carried away with my teksumo and put a mini apm, GPS etc on it so its a bit on the heavy side around 850grams with a 2200mah but it still flies really nice, floats around pretty slow and with a 2826 1400kv and 8x4  it does about 55mph flat out, might stick a 2200kv on it in the future for a bit more speed. As I said I'm pretty new to wings and you sound like you have far more experience than me but I'm gonna fly the teksumo till it breaks then maybe look at a CTH pinata or maybe a monkeyblunt teksumo  ;D

My mate put the AXN 2150kv motor on his Tek Sumo but to be honest it's not that fast, maybe the motor he used just doesn't have enough power, he's running a 6x4

I think build it light is gonna be my approach. Mates offered me a Teksumo but I'm gonna try this Reaper first to see how I get on and see if I can use stuff I have lying around. All else fails I'll fall-back to the TBS.
