Noisy video.
« on: December 24, 2014, 04:03:34 PM »
How on earth are you guys getting clean video signal?

I build two minis now and I get CRAP video pretty much every time. I build a mini for mate tommo before he lost it and That was crystal clear yet when it comes to building my own I get terrible noisy black lines on screen from the moment I go over 20% throttle. I tried hard to keep all things distanced apart as much as can be on these minis. I kept wiring clean as can be and I made a small LC filter with a small ferrite ring and a 470uf 16v capacitor and It might have helped a little but is still far from good. after some reading I understood that powering cam from balance lead will also help but none of these things seem to work.. How the hell can I clean it up?

Up front
800mw 1.2ghz fox vtx
Sony 600 tvl cam
Minim OSD
Mobius (not switched on)

EZ uhf rx in the rear.

What am I doing wrong guys?

the readymaderc 12v/5v ubec is an awesome filter as well as being a useful regulated power supply

http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=505_514&products_id=2938

out of stock at the moment

also some VTX are affected more by noise, when I went from a racewood VTX to a RMRC/fox VTX noise appeared that wasnt showing up before.

I always have crappie video of late. Think like Ben says after changING from law mate and race woods the rmrc one is a bit more sensitive and shows up my crappie build. But could also just be the abuse it's taken. Got a new onemail here might stick that on see if it's any better. Still font know how my bodged saw filter mod will hold up yet

yeah that's what ill have to try next then a 12v ubec. I wasn't sure if there was such a thing. It would make sense that some are more susceptible to noise than others. The problem really only showed up when I switched out the damaged racewood  for the fox  come to think of it. I even had problems just testing it on the twinstar with a separate lipo and a good spacing... I am interested in a smaller 5.8ghz setup anyway for the mini just didn't want to have bought the Fox vtx and lawmate vrx for nothing..

Same as the one I knocked up mates only using a different cap. 470uf 16v.

I reckon it could be down to the fox 800 somehow. I tried all I can think of.. its overkill to say the least for a mini anyway .. think ill swap it out for another racewood or try some 5.8ghz and see how I get on with that.

Not sure if this will help but some things I've found helped remove lines and interference with my setups.
  • Twist your wires where possible. I like to twist the video round the ground and leave the positive free but then I tend to route wires in different directions as required.
  • Use a LC filter, ferrite rings are ok but do need a certain number and tight windings to work correctly. I use LC filters on my GS all the time, the ones you get with fat shark / immersion stuff
  • Always use ferrite/LC filters at source not at the end of wires.
  • Make sure everything is common ground
  • If I need a voltage reg I use pololu regulators, always a clean output. GetFPV sell them but much cheaper here http://www.technobotsonline.com/ and their in the UK
Also don't rule out problems with your GS and the location. I have one location that has terrible interference that I never get anywhere else.

Hope that helps.

Hello guys just reed this thread and maybe its good to post an image/ video of your problem before asking what is wrong.
To start with video related problems have sometimes something to do with spikes from the bec/ motor but this is not always the case. Lot of video problems I see here are because people didn't hook up their tx and camera right.
And even then you still can have problems. Still lots of people use antennas with a vertical polarisation. Especially the higher frequencies are sensitive for bouncing and out phase signals.

Anyway try this as a good starting point:

always use a common ground point
use twisted/ shielded cables and keep them away from high power cables to motors etc
never put cables with sensitive signals parallel to power cables
keep other antennas away from sensitive video equipment
use lc/rc filters to get rid of spikes
Keep in mind that sometimes the switching power supply on the video tx or in the camera is the problem
Keep in mind that small spikes can hide or modify the sync pulse of the video signal
use good antennas lot of home brew antennas aren't matched and the video tx isn't able to get signal in the antenna.
just adding caps didn't solve the problem in many cases, always calculate the lc/ rc network in the power supply properly
also measure your equipment with running motor(s) in many cases the voltage drops to far and the power supply didn't give a stable voltage

and if nothing helps try to find someone with a scope and an analyser to measure the signals
