3D Printing some useful items
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:58:39 PM »
Just about got the hang of printing with PLA

Here is a 10mm cube, a 25mm spacer and a replacement part for a camera mount, was surprised how well the castellations formed and the outside knurling effect.

The spacer was designed for a 2.6mm hole making it ready for machine tapping

Today I started with ABS, the print started lifting off the plate, gradually increased temps from 210c nozzle, 60c plate, to 230c nozzle, 100c plate, better but still not right, then included whats called a <brim> Like the brim of a hat, it gives a larger surface area, it worked but a tiny sign of lifting, On the surfaces you can feel the layers more than with the PLA, think the temps need to go up a bit more!

If anyone wants something drawn up in 3D for printing just ask! Will need decent measurements though (and not be overwhelmed)

First attempt at printing a gear.

0.2mm top and bottom didn't seem to work!
ABS
Plate temp 110c
Extruder 240c

This is as hot as I'm willing to go!

Somebody asked if PLA and ABS can be drilled, machined, and I was wondering if it could be threaded. So carried out a few small tests today.

interesting video bigmouse, i'm not actually interested in 3d printing but some reason i found my self watching it all, i did notice though in the video you didn't turn the abs piece around so you tapped the same end twice with both taps, unless you did it off camera

Yes I did get a bit confused with the video clips, I must have turned it off camera because there are threads both ends, just can't remember which tap I used in which end!

On reflection I reckon, PLA can be tapped but in stages, remove for clearing the pla swarf several times or it will just gouge the hole bigger! I think the ABS was happy with the spiral flute tap, but again could have been tapped by hand. Need to do a few more just to make sure, think the abs is best choice, stronger and can take an impact.

A tiny distributer cap as a test print! All same file.

Right to left: extruder 210c, 190c, 190c with internal support.

This is an apm anti vibe mounting. This uses the same 45 deg mounted rubbers as shown on the diydrones site, and available via thingyverse, although I have drawn these mountings from scratch myself so the similarity stops there!

Can you do one like a + shape BM? Mobius for "Vertical" positioning, GoPro for "Horizontal"
Would prefer in green or black :)
Do-able? (For the ZMR250 frame).
