4S mini's What motors are you using, how do you rate them?
« on: October 19, 2014, 08:26:40 PM »
Thinking of building a 4S mini Quad,  There is a choice of mini size ESC's available but not many 4S capable mini motors, in fact I can't find any!

So what have you tried, do they handle 4S, and what props did you use?

Short list of victims here:
Cobra 2204 1960kv
Cobra 2204 2300kv
Sunnysky X2204S 2300kv

But there must be some I have not found...

The cobra 1960kv are recommended over the 2300

I use the Sunnysky 2300kvs myself althought generally speaking I seem to be having problems or one sort or another with the KISS esc and the sunnys on my 4s spanky and have had to swap out several of both

Some people are using the 1806-2 and the H1806-6 RCX motors on 4s also however the H1806-6 have really crap 2 strand easy to snap wires that have that horrible anti-solder coating on them when you cut them back on the other hand the 1806-2 have fantastic multi strand wires silicone coated and are a joy to work with in comparison. For both these I suggest the 12amp RCX ESC

I kind of feel that the lower 1980kv motors would have the best chance of surviving but can't find a way to prove it! The 1980 and the 2300kv motors would both be overrun by 25% on 4S. The 1980 being least ridiculous calculated rpm of 31700 compared to 36800rpm so maybe kinder on the 12A ESC's.

I see there is no sunnysky 1980, so might try the cobra 1980kv ones

Will be using the RCX 12A ESC's but a big jump in cost between the old RCX 2400 motors and this lot!

I recently just bought some Black DYS 1806 motors,

Seems they come out rather well in thrust tests ect..  Though my knowledge Is limited I would go as far as saying there bloody excellent.. The motor itself looks nicely built Next to my rcx 1804's The windings in the motors are nice and neat the wires are nice and thick and generally look like a quality set of motors. And just 10 quid Is the best part :)

Check out this link or Rc groups for some thrust/amp tests. Even some 4s info on them.

Martin has tried quite a few mini motors including 2 different types of t-motor, he does like the sunnys, it will be nice to know what he thinks of the ones he has tried

I've used quite a few DYS ESC's before and I can't fault them! Cheapest 30A ESC's I've ever bought too, and flashable to simonK. So going by the ESC's the motors should be fine!

Well I've gone ahead and ordered some DYS 1806 motors, which incidentally are 2300kv, not my ideal choice but cheap! If they are troublesome will try the Cobra 1980kv. But please continue to add your experiences of any of these mini motors on 4S

ive tried the following

sunnysky 2204s these have been gr8 and flown with these lots , ive had a single magnet come unglued that I was able to fix cos these motors are very serviceable grub screws can be loose when you get them but can easy get them out and take um apart for this reason they have been my favourite, also these have been best match for kiss escs, only bad thing with sunnys is there not all the same diff batches are slightly different not a lot but windings are perfect on first set I got but there abit messy on later ones I got but magnets are glued much better, most proven motor 4s

tmotor 2204 these are loverly motors ive not fitted them yet as not had problems with my spankys that both have sunnys on but shaft design is much better than 1806, Im looking forward to trying them when I got time as they look gr8

tmotor 1806 these are great motors harder to tune with kiss escs but fine on other escs. they did give most power out of all motors ive tryed , but problem with them for me is thin shaft and the tiny grub screw are next to impossible to remove on ones I had so when shaft comes loose. the quality of them is gr8 just pitty about size of grub screw they use its tiny and its threadlocked , but defo the best performance

dys be1806 not tryed these extensively flown about los and used rcx 10amp escs that took 4s amazingly, very good for money though, thin shafts but other than that good quality, did get a little hot with 5x4 on 4s  though , nothing major though

pics of 1806 and 2204 tmotors

if your on 5 inch props I think 2300kv is best anyhow , ive not had any of the above motors burnout even with 5x4 3 bladed props

Not on 4s but I have the rctimer clones of the dys be1806 and they are really good motors, decent qaulity and power but as i said only run them on 3s. The dys are supposed to be slightly better quality than the rctimers as well. quite a bit of motor for the money.

but what does the size of the frame matter its same motors with same props and 4s lipo like u would on a 330, so if anything frame is a bit lighter, you might not get as big a lipo on there but thats the only difference.
