help finding 5v camera
« on: April 15, 2014, 06:55:20 PM »
Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone out there knows of a decent board camera that can be powered directly from the 5v output of a 600mw 5.8 IRC VTX?

thanks in advance

The two 5v one's I've used before are the fatshark(cased) camera http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15130__FatShark_RCV922CAM_PAL_Sony_420TVL_w_Spare_lens.html
I see its been superseded now by this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=39735
Have used that one down to a 1S lipo supply! quite a reasonable image for it's size!

The 1 gram micros are 5v, again work down to 1S supply Example here: http://www.firstpersonview.co.uk/cameras/1g-nano-520tvl-camera
Image not good of course, although remarkable for it's size and weight, (better than the keychain cams live feed.

I had one from 1st person view. Was about £60 though but work off 5-16v or something like that

I'm very interested in these two, do you have any comparison videos or example footage for these cameras?

Ideally, it needs to be a board camera so I can mount it using stand-offs.

I had an idea last night, not sure if it would work...

I'm thinking about using liquid electrical tape to cover the PCB of a board camera for 2 reasons.
1, for protection... a solid yet pliable covering... almost like heatshrink... rubber like as to absorb small impacts that might put components out of place during a crash or less than favourable landing.
2, for splashproofing.

are there any components on these board cameras that wouldn't like being encased in sillicon due to overheating etc? is this a bad idea?

I remember years ago, someone on a different forum (perhaps the TBS guys) took to waterproofing their cameras by "dipping" them and one thread was started because he had dropped the whole camera in and ruined the sensor. I will be using the provided brush to brush the liquid electrical tape onto the board.

For example videos look at the product page, scroll down they're there
I've tried to make the videos worst case scenario, like having the camera pointed at a dark tree with the sun peeping out from behind the tree

As for covering board cameras I wouldn't bother, I've had many crashes and have yet to get a broken camera
Coating it may possibly cause heating issues I don't know, it's not something I've done before

If you want to protect a board camera you could "sandwich" it between plates using stand off's so....  plate, stand-off, camera, stand-off, plate
Plates being "L" shaped so the base can bolt/screw down, that would be easy to make using some readily available and cheap flat aluminium from B&Q and stand-off's from Maplins

oh, I forgot number 3... for looks lol an all black or all red covering would "look" better than the bare board... but I'll see what it looks like before I do.

I used this stuff on my TBS Discovery solder pads and it's brilliant, once dried it can be easily taken off should the need arise.

Cheers Tecnic, I'll take a look at those links properly after work, my work PC blocks videos
