weather/water proof FPV platform
« on: February 23, 2012, 12:45:39 PM »
I'm toying with the idea of trying to make my bixler weatherproof so I can fly if it's raining.

I'm thinking of using the same kind of techniques used in RC boats to keep the motor/esc in a watertight location but still be able to have the motor shaft and prop on the outside.

waterproofing the fuselage itself wont be too much of a problem, the EPO is thick enough to allow for a "ridge" at the openings and the insertion of rubber seals, but keeping the FPV gear safe might cause headaches.

anyone else have any ideas for weatherproofing a bixler type plane? or would it be better to buy/build something a bit more suitable?

its just a concept right now, too many projects to actually do it, but perhaps someone else might have the funds/time to follow through.

can't see the point myself...notdissing the idea, but what are you gonna do about ground station in raining conditions?  bin-bag over your head I guess ;)

well I heard about this invention called a car... :)

yeah, I was thinkin bout that too. Ben and Chris r have already flown from a moving van, with the technology/kit available I think it's definitely possible. I'm imagining it would also be a challenge to pilot too, as the effect of raindrops/runoff would be more significant on a small model plane compared to a full sized craft.

I do agree though, what is the point? I'm sure others may be along to come up with reasons to waterproof/weatherproof an FPV craft.

I for one am fed up of the british weather being so effin miserable and would like to increase my potential flying time

I've flown in light rain with my Slipstream, only because it's started raining during the flight and I've just carried on going.

Not sure much needs weatherproofing tbh. Taping over your servo's and keeping your electronics inside the plane would be good enough for most things.

The biggest issue will be getting rain on your flight cam :) It's real hard to fly then... as I found out not too long ago.

I was thinking about this. The best conclusion I came to was to place the camera in a PVC tube with a perspex lens at the front. Then you have a little windscreen wiper on a 3g servo. EEk eek!
