Building materials
« on: November 10, 2013, 08:15:52 AM »
Hi, Anybody know where to get the Blue Foam stuff that people use for scratch building? I have built loads of depron planes in the past but want to build a large wing for FPV use. It seems very easy to gen in the States but cant find it here.

I remember looking for that stuff a while back when I was scratchbuilding...

closest I could find was insulating foam (meant for loft/wall insulation or similar) in B&Q and it wasn't as "cheap" as the stuff the yanks keep going on about so I didn't bother

Thanks, looks like an expensive option though.
I work for a builders merchant so I will ask some of our suppliers if they have something. I will post my findings.

Ian, I used some foam out of a builders skip, its the insulation type about 7cm thick coverted in foil on one side, Hot wired wing panels out carved to shape and used balsa leading and trailing edges.covered it in Gaint sharks iron on covering (bloody good stuff loads better than solar film)
 cheers tony

P.s guess where I found the foam

That rings a bell, I work in tool hire but I remember seeing some thick insulation board somewhere in the yard. I will have a look tomorrow, thanks.

MrBen, elevons are balsa and as trailing edge is balsa I used 1lt milk carton for hinges cut  lengths  30x10 mm slightly score the middle with screwdriver point to get some flex rough them up with sandpaper and epoxy into slot cut in T/edge and  elevons 4 per side works a treat            cheers Tony

Found it, At Jewson we can get 2440 x 1220mm sheets of what I think is the same as Blue Core. It is available in 50mm or 75mm thickness for about £18 to £25 + vat and has to be bought in packs of five. It is called floor mate, it is blue and very dense.
