Was holding out for this until someone pointed out the Ezuhf uses the metal box as a ground plain and the plug in type has just a plastic case, you just won't get as far with the plug-in type. So I just ordered a Ezuhf set-up, the plug in type will still be a great bit of kit but won't get the same range as the metal cased version.

Sander is saying the range is nearly the same, but even if its just half it will still be plenty.

I will try and do some kind of tests when I get mine.

"nearly the same"
for that comment to be correct/fair I personally would accept it to mean anything over 85% of the current version's range.

for a difference in price of around £80 less, I'd be over the frickin moon to have "nearly the same" range as the metal boxed version.

Oh he actually said similar, not nearly the same, my bad.  ;D

From their FB page:

"How will range compare to original as you stated the metal case acts as a ground plane and this is plastic"

"Not sure what you are referring to, but this should see similar range as the larger aluminum box version. Output power in high power mode however is slightly lower on the JR module."

synonyms of "Similar":

alike, (much) the same, indistinguishable, close, near, almost identical, akin, comparable, like, equivalent, matching, comparable to, close to, near (to)

again, I'd be overly satisfied if the range of the module was anywhere near the old type.

so, if I'm to invest in upgrading my basic spektrum 2.4 and Fatshark 5.8

this and a 9Xr would be a good way to go?

then just sort the FPV side of things which can be 900 or 1.2  yes?

9xr is cheap with powerful programming but poor quality buttons, I just swapped mine to a FRsky taranis

yep, this Taranis does seem the way to go

and FPV for mid-long range would be 1.2 according to the votes here :-)

Lawmate seems too cheap to be true, opinions?

I agree Chris, I never use anywhere near the full range of my metal boxed version. If this performs as Sander says it will be perfect for the type of flying I do.

current price of the boxed version is more than twice that of the module. if the boxed version was guaranteed twice the range it would be worth it...

yes ratty, for the kind of flying 90% of us do, this module is ideal

however, the receivers are still quite expensive so they wont be losing too much money :)

as for 9xr vs taranis... taranis wins hands down, however I've had the turnigy 9X for years and it's frickin spot on with a decent rf module in the back. I modded it early on with an addon board so i could use the er9x firmware which opens up all the switches to be assigned to any channel.

bottom line, unless you're a perfectionist you wont be disappointed with the 9xr and the ezuhf module, but if you've got £100 spare to get a better transmitter, go for the taranis.

Just thought how neat it would look plugged into my DSX9/PCM9 so I brought a plug-in one anyway, will do back to back tests and see what the range/rssi is like.
