5.8ghz antennas
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:42:09 PM »
Decided to re-make my 5.8ghz antennas today, as I was a bit disappointed in the performance of my previous ones.  I only had very thin copper wire at the time and have found some a bit thicker so have tried these, but haven't had chance to test (other than indoors).  Hoping they will improve my VTX/VRX performance a bit.  Had been getting static at 1.3km out of a 600mw vtx, and from what I've read it should be far more capable.  Fitted the standard linear's on Saturday and had perfect video at 800m so highlighted something not right about my CP's.  Decision was made for me in the fact that I squashed one in my pocket too...

1.3Km on 600mW  :-\  They should be ALLOT more capable.  I have done ground tests to 2.2Km on clover leaf and skewplanar wheel on 5.8Ghz at 200mW and still had crystal clear image.  I hope your new antenna works better for you

Sorry, I should have pointed out that my radio gear also gave up the ghost at 1.3km's.  I'm waiting for delivery of my 35mhz gear any way :)

I went straight from a Dx7 to UHF it's like comparing chalk and cheese! I do still use the Dx7 allot but only on my heli's as I keep them close

Well my FF8 arrived yesterday but no crystal which was a bit annoying. Oh well. Will try to get some today (unless anyone has a spare kicking around?).

Must admit, I do wish I had just gone straight to UHF and then ramp up the vtx ;-)

will do. I'm quite keen to see if the thicker section copper makes much difference. Hoping to do some filming Sunday morning of a local motorsport event (not that I'll be doing much distance, but hopefully will get to test the antennas).
