KK2 board battery setting

I have read that setting the KK2 board to Ni-xx rather than LiPo ( even when using lipo's) stops the board from killing to motors when battery power is low, this saves your model when you use an alarm too.
Otherwise you run the risk of losing the model mid flight
Anyone else heard this? Would you recommend this setting? Ta
