Ants quadcopter is smoking !!
« on: June 29, 2013, 11:38:14 AM »
Just come back from a flight. Took off and smoke started pouring from my rctimer frame !!  I had flown it loads before. I have mounted the kk board on plastic posts and drilled through the lower plate. Critically I had used metal screws to hold the posts in place. I think the wet grass had caused a short causing one of the posts to melt, probably because the lower plate distributes the battery !!

Should I have avoided drilling through and mounted the kk on foam tape ? What do you all reckon.

in hindsight prolly would have been best to use sticky tape.looks like you shorted +- on board either drilling or metal screws..

DOH! for drilling through what is effectively a PCB, then DOH! again for using metal screws lol.

I used the poundshop sticky foam tape for mounting my flight controllers

Well scuttled!

Suppose you could've just screwed the plastic stand-off's to the FC first then bonded them permanently to the board. Stand-offs are ideal if you make use of the KK2's built in battery alarm, which requires a direct feed to the board through a connector, such as a JST soldered to the underside; a connector attached to the underside can make level mounting on sticky tape a bit awkward, so stand-offs are ideal.

Stand offs and tiny rubber bands or o rings are probably the best solution.

Ok I'm a dumb ass lol ! I had a spare lower plate and just used thick double sided foam tape. Works great - flew today but 'twas a bit windy.
