Turnigy 9xr mods
« on: June 12, 2013, 04:16:44 PM »
Hey up all

I want to make this mod for my 9xr so that i can display Frsky telemetry data....

http://forum.turnigy9xr.com/converting-9xr-to-frsky-telemetry-djt-module-t362.html

If im honest im not keen on soldering to pcb like this so i was wondering if any of you fine fellows in the north west would help me out ? I ordered the radio on a whim to put my Frsky module in it and its still on the water at the mo so no rush. I will travel to you and of course bring some beers !

Cheers

personally mate... I wouldn't bother with that particular mod... I know everyone is different and has different needs, but I don't think the 9x or 9xr needs to be modded for frsky telemetry. the little "beep" when rssi is dropping is enough for me to tell me to hit RTH or turn around.

each to their own though i guess

I kind of like the idea of using it to find my quad when I crash it in a field of crop. Apparently you can use the tx antenna as a directional finder with the rssi strength on screen.

Don't listen to everything Bruce say's
He also said the Sport Jet 70 can be run on 5S
I've now spent countless hours trying to source a replacement 5S capable motor to go with my 4 of 5S batteries (lot of wonga) and may end up having to buy a complet new EDF system as the motors out there that might possibly work have a different shaft size to that required by my EDF unit

Thanks Brucie :(

Oh by the way...
Using the TX as a kind of tracker using the "null" spot will give you an approximate direction if you're at a fair distance but once you get closer it'l be useless
A lost model finder or even the null spot combined with a buzzer might help

I guess it would all depend on if you intend to use this on LOS aircraft or FPV aircraft.

If FPV aircraft, then a more reliable way to find a lost model (than that suggested by Bruce) would be to use a directional antenna on your video rx, preferably with a narrow beam width (higher gain, more turns on a helical for example).

If putting on a LOS plane then I guess it would be worth it, good luck with that tiny soldering lol ;)

I am embarrassed to say I have never used a lost model buzzer and as such have just ordered one to try. Thanks for the comments guys. Chris - I will have a couple of gin and tonics to steady my hand before soldering and then probably forget all about it :-)

I bought a lost model alarm after dropping into long grass about 70 yards away and taking half an hour to find it! Walked past it, was so close to it at times I must have almost stepped on it more than once...
They are very cheap, well worth while, but don't forget if the battery gets disconnected on landing (which often happens to me)  then it won't help of course.

obviously, the more "things" we add to our aircraft for "just in case" situations, the heavier it will get and the more cramped it will be inside.

I dabbled with a GPS/GSM tracker for a while. it's basically a mobile phone (requires sim card) with a GPS attached. you interrogate it with a phone call or text message and it sends you a text message back with it's gps co-ords, and a useful web link to google maps. unless the impact of the crash was that serious it destroyed the tracker, then this would still work even if your flight battery was dead or disconnected. (oh, and you'd need GPS signal and mobile phone signal lol)

Brilliant idea, but it was a bit bulky, and actually heavier than my current mobile phone (HTC one X). I found out the hard way when I put it in my old skywalker, that the mobile phone part of the tracker interfered with my video signal, reducing the range to under 1km. I think the main issue here was component separation, but I was very limited as to where I could actually put the tracker due to it's size and weight. If you were to design an FPV setup with the tracker in mind from the beginning I'm sure you could have much better results.

This is the age old problem of small models!, screening can often be next to useless, whereas air spacing often works quite well, Hence the reason my quads are 0.8m across motors.

Well the 9xr has arrived and I am not going to start pulling it apart. I have to say its a damn good radio so either I have been incredibly lucky and got a good one or a lot of the reports I have read are off. I don't have any problems reaching the switches, the frisky module slots straight  in and its ergonomicis / weight is spot on. Really pleased :-)

Chris when you said that the frsky tx beeps when you are out of range. Is that irrespective of the Rx used or does it have to be the d8r ?

it has to be the telemetry receiver as well mate. If you've bought the right combo bundle, it should work. I bought the one without the telemetry receiver as I only intend to fly very close in LOS on 2.4

Why ?, with an Frsky and the right kit you could be doing 80km plus  ;)

FPV 80km full flight. Small | Large

PS
The guy who did this (Alex) is the guy who programs for the RVOSD
