Which battery connectors?
« on: June 04, 2013, 11:09:53 PM »
Just had a deans connector on a battery fail tonight, plugged the same battery into another model and hey presto it works again - lucky I wasn't flying. Thinking of switching over to a different type of connector. Most of my packs, or at least the ones i would change first are 3 cell 2200 to 5000 packs.

So what's the most user friendly xt60 or ec3 or ec5 ??

Cheers

XT60, more reliable than Deans and of course Hobbyking batteries mostly come with them fitted

Yup I have been on XT60s for 18months or so now, never looked back. Never had a lipo come with one fitted though at least that means I can do a proper solder job ;)

I use Traxxas plugs on everything. But my needs are a bit odd what with no finger control and all. XT60s just make my knuckles bleed.

Throw they deans in the bin, XT60's all the way!

No-Dachi, I suppose the bullet type connector fitting would be best for you then!
Connectors sometimes does get quite tight...

smaller LiPos like 2200mah 3S I have XT60

anything that might pull more Amps, I go for 4mm bullet connectors like the one pictured here:

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/catalog/T5000-4-20.jpg

they're very easy to solder and there's no need for heatshrink tubing as the plastic covers the solder join.

Martin - how do you mean ? I had a motor start spinning slowly erratically and stop. I put it down to a poor solder
joint but I now think it was the deans.

Dump those Deans off fellas, caused me several crashes
It's not so bad on a plane as it reconnects and you hardly notice, but on a multi the controller has to re-boot and you have to re-arm by which time you're in the dirt
They're Ok as long as you check the spring isn't squashed down before each flight

mine was squealing and stalling when going from 0-full throttle quickly , i thought it was soldering but after rewiring several times it looks like its the deans , ive allways liked deans and think there good upto the point your pulling over 40amps
will add it onlydid it when battery was fully charged , once was like 90percent charge it would be fine pain on launches though

Ouch! ... Had a motor intermittently losing power on my QAV500 the other day. Couldn't find anything wrong. Disconnected the battery, reconnected and it seemed to clear, so I flew. After a few minutes the motor cut out momentarily, but I was high enough to recover. However, as I brought it in, it cut out again, hitting a tree. No damage! Tore it apart and found the ESC signal cables had been chaffing between the dirty and clean plates, one of which was shorting out on the carbon fibre, probably as result of an earlier bobbin separation. Something for those with QAV's to be aware of.

XT60's for me.

Deans rely on the plastic housing to squeeze the spring, which in turn makes a spring pressure contact between the two connectors. A friend lost power on his heli, found the plastic had yielded and the spring wasn't compressed much and was getting hot. Must admit I doubted his explanation until I saw the connectors in reality, that was it, never used them again.

Giant Cod used to give an explanation that the non genuine Deans were made from an inferior plastic that would deform, but what the hell is genuine or not these days?
