First post: need hardware list and advise for first fpv
« on: June 03, 2013, 06:51:09 PM »
Hello everyone , this is my first visit and post here on the forums.

i am currently building my first multi rotor. It's a next level 650 quad, with the new DJ naza V2 with GPS. I'm planning on useing either my Dx7 or old but reliable futaba 9CH 2.4 FASST for my radio.

So my goal is to get into FPV flight with this quad . I was wondering if anyone could recommend hardware setups to record / view video useing a small monitor via ground station as well as a goggle setup. I'm unsure which way I want to go as of yet, so maybe a video rx/tx system that would let me switch between goggles or monitor would work. HD would be a plus and I don't mind waiting for the new fat sharks, I'd love to try the head tracking system. I guess it's just the rx/ tx for the video signal that I am unsure of... Brands, types that work together ect. I need a lot if education in this area.

One other thing. I wanted to mount a go pro camera, mainly because this is all I know to use and is quality but am unsure of its capabilities. , Are flyers using the go pro to record video with another smaller camera for fps flight view? Or do fps setups use one cam to fly and capture video with?
In my imagination ' I'd like to creat a ground station that will fit into a medium size silver suit case, like the ones usually handcuff to people in the movies, which I can pop open at the field with the monitor inside along with everything else I need.
This being said, I also think I would live the feel and experience of having goggles on.

Help me get started with a system / hardware setup that works and is reliable with of course good video capture but won't break the bank.

Thanks , Chris

I sounds like your first fpv setup!

I'd forget ground stations, keep it simple, fatshark goggles, 5.8 immersion 600mW vTx
2.4 RC radio. With that setup you can fly LOS (more or less line of sight) up to 2 km depending on terrain. Lot of fun.

First upgrade, I'd go for simple uhf like OpenLRS = short antennas, plenty of range, not so dependent on terrain. Could swap to 2.4g for vTx = generally better range than 5.8 (reduction over water) and might get complaints from nervous fellow flyers on 2.4.

Can't see a reason for getting more extravagant on a multi...

as for the gopro, you can use at as your fpv camera, all you need is a cable, you can make it or buy it. one end usb the other immersion or whatever vtx you go for. However this is what i went for at first and i had a crash which pulled out my usb socked from inside my gopro, so i wouldn't reconmend it personally. now i've had to buy a gopro  battery charger as i can't charge via usb, also i can't connect to pc to share files, i've had to purchase a card reader and as i use 64gb card not all card readers will read them.

so long story short i would go for a gopro to record the flight with a seperate fpv camera for the vtx, i went with this onev myself.

a little pricey but i tried a few cheaper options from securicam2000 and i couldn't get them to work, this one just worked straight away all you need is the cacle to link it to vtx which they sell seperate.

here is the cable you will need to use your gopro 3 as a fpv camera which i wouldn't advise. gopr 2 needs a different cable which they also sell

Most the cams firstpersonview sell are from sc2000, the only difference is the price.

basically, we're using wireless CCTV systems... systems that have been available for years before they were used for FPV.

There are some shops out there that exploit the fact that many people in FPV do not know this fact, and re-brand basic CCTV cameras as "FPV Camera" even though you can get identical items from places like securitycamera2000
