LOS: Tek Sumo 2.0
« on: May 27, 2013, 06:18:33 PM »
I had a spare tek sumo in the shed, so set to work building it... this time for LOS first then eventually FPV with 5.8GHz gear.

started the build at 12.30 and by 4pm I was flying it :) talk about quick build or what!!!

seems to fly well, but I need to dial down the throws a bit and wait for a less windy day. it's now only 600g but could do with being a tad heavier to cope with less than completely calm days.... cue the FPV gear :)

Since getting back from this flight, I've taken the plunge and opened up the #16 HD cam... the form factor is good for covert recording, but crap for mounting on an aircraft for FPV. I'm hoping to combine the innards with a 5.8VTX in a single box/unit powered by a 2s LiPo and BEC

Tek Sumo 2.0 - LOS (for now)

Finally some nice weather pays a visit to North Wiltshire. Got a call saying my Mum would be arriving in an hour so managed to get a quick 20 minutes out of the house whilst the missus tidied up.

The Tek Sumo is now my most favourite model ever. can just throw it in the boot and it's just so effortless to fly, and I just love the stall characteristics, as you can see in the video.

I have a cheeky plan to FPV it using a FPV fuselage pod from Experimental Airlines, the one he uses with the Synapse wing... but obviously the Pod will only contain the flight battery and the FPV gear. That way I can uncouple it and have a LOS flyer at any time :)

Chris, you could get away with using just 1S for the video and lose the ubec!

Here is a little test setup I made yesterday, tested keychain video out, and the 1gram camera. both powered by a 1S lipo. The keychain out was dark and took time to recover when going into shade where the 1 gram camera worked really well, exceptionally well for it's size, will try to get comparison video soon.

Everything you see here in the picture weighs 72 grams (only a hot glued test stand)

Laminating a LOS tek isnt needed IMO, but a heavier FPV tek... it would probably do it a lot of good.

I would consider laminating a tek in the future, but for now I'll just strap it with tape :)

looks ideal, although I will prob use a pre-manufactured VTX and use the AV-out from the #16.

I agree no need to lam a LOS Tek, but for FPV I lam every wing I own. It makes them so much more rigid and crash proof.

Hopefully maiden this one today.
