Portable Quad
« on: January 23, 2012, 01:48:01 PM »
I built my mini quad so that it fits perfectly in my laptop bag with the props off.
Here's a vid I made when flying in Germany last year.  All LOS no fpv gear at the time.

Nice, flying over water always make me nervous, so what size is the quad, what camera are you using and are you still flying in + mode? I think X mode makes a better video.

Thanks MrBen.  KK diy board and 35cm diameter  quad with 1100kv motors.  GoPro camera.  I was shaking like a leaf after flying over the water lol.
Pic here but it has evolved a bit since this photo.

I'm presuming the reason he flies + mode on this quad is because of the way the KK is attached to it.... i.e. in the standard holes on the centre plates (i have the same ones). the "front" of the KK is a corner, so without adding some other plate on top, there's no way to mount the front corner of the KK to point between the arms for X mode

Although not a difficult mod, or expensive, I see why one wouldn't bother, especially considering he has a bigger quad for X mode and the whole point of this small quad is to be portable, so light as possible and as uncomplicated as possible

Nice quad mate :)

I've replaced the frame plates with thin ply as I managed to snap a prop in flight by flooring it too much and too many loops then full throttle recoveries lol.  yup one prop gave up under load.  anyway only damage was the thin g10 frameplates.  I simply used the cracked plates as templates and cut out new ones from ply. but I couldnt be bothered to drill and align new mounting holes /brackets.  Maybe  one day I'll swap it for x mode.
Its a great simply hack about without the gopro attached.

I love my Mini quad platform - I have now ditched the go pro and rigged it up for FPV only. Go Pro only on the big super quad.  I modified my ebay FPV camera gimbal to fit onto my frame and make use of the tilt function on channel 6 (rotary knob on Futaba).  I have to say it works an absolute treat. Not only can I clear the prop and have a clear view in + mode, I can also  change the camera angle to look down while up mega high which gives an awesome view.  Also good for practicing vertical landings - very difficult to do with minimal drift.

Couple of pics.
