Storm OSD help
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:56:29 AM »
Hey all

Can someone talk me through how to set up a Storm when using a seperate SBEC powering the video gear and servos. I am contemplating using 2 seperate 3 cell packs, 5000 for motor and 1300 for video gear and servos but im having a bit of a block on how to set it up. In fact do i need to do this ? im worried about the power supply to the servos. I see there is a diagram in the storm instructions showing using a seperate battery for video but not for servos?

Also when using a Foxtech vtx do i take only the video feed from the larger connecter and the -/+ from the smaller one or use the -ve on the larger connector? Im confused !

Cheers

Ant

Hey Ant.

firstly, you need to remove the jumper at the "power in" pins. This is where you would feed the StormOSD with 12v from your 3S Lipo.

the 5v for the control servos and the other voltage to control the video equipment are completely separated within the StormOSD hardware.

the StormOSD simply passes the 5v from the receiver, through to the servos so you will need to either

A) make a splitter for your 2nd LiPo, one feed goes to the power in pins on the Storm OSD, the other goes to the SBEC. the SBEC then feeds the receiver with 5v regulated, the receiver in turn passes this 5v through the StormOSD to control the servos.

B) feed the SBEC from the charge plug of the small 3S lipo

either way once you use the SBEC to power the receiver, you will need to remove the red wire from the ESC servo plug.

I personally would go with method A for neatness

Hope this helps mate.

Cheers Chris - do you think I am making this over complicated or is this a sensible mod ?

Definitely a sensible mod mate.

I use a 1000mah 3S to power the StormOSD separately from the flight battery. That way the FPV gear will pretty much always have enough power to transmit as it draws much less than a motor/esc in flight.

the flight battery will always be dropping in voltage, from the moment you launch, so will the FPV battery, but at a much slower rate, so your voltage stays higher for longer.

if you shared the battery between the FPV and motor, then the FPV will be fed much less voltage toward the end of the flight.

As for SBEC... never used one on a plane, I have a few here hanging around, one I use to power my Archos at the field from a LiPo, the other is probably going to be used in the Skyhunter at some stage.

my Tek Sumo doesn't really need one as it only has 2 x micro servos, compared to the Bixler 2 which had 7 (2 x Ailerons, 2 x Flaps, Rudder, Elevator, Pan servo). I was risking it not using a separate BEC in the Bixler 2.

HI Ant
I had the same advice from Chris and things are working a treat with my Storm OSD the instructions that come with it are a little fuzzy to start but chris even made a sketch of what went where, top notch advice.

hey, now it's my turn to ask for help

as some might have seen on my last GS recording video, the StormOSD "locked" up on me just before impact... so it wasn't the impact of the crash that caused the lockup.

so, I get a random PM on RCG from Dr.Tom after seeing my bixler crash, he saw the OSD freeze and attributed it to FW1.02... even used the vid as an example of the 1.02 "bug".... funny thing is, my OSD came with 1.03 (although it might have been beta)

I hooked up my osd to see what firmware the boot screen would show and nothing :(

I get the image from the cam on the screen, but no OSD overlay.

fingers crossed a firmware flash might do the trick... but i'm stumped if that doesnt work :(

corp you haven't turned one of the 3 screens ie blank one have you - one of them shows no OSD. I think it's the right button that cycles though these. looks like the gps is talking to the osd the red light is flashing .

nah, pushing the buttons was doing nothing... however it's all fixed now...

silly me, previously, i had set the video mode to NTSC as that's what I run the GoPro on (for higher framerate). so it was still in NTSC mode, and the WDR600 cam I'm using here is PAL. the PAL signal was overriding the OSD. unplugged camera and tried again. lo and behold... OSD working fine... thank goodness :) changed video mode to "AUTO" and now it works with the WDR600. :) all happy now

Cupid, the firmware is indeed 1.03 beta, any chance I could borrow your flash tool please? I'll cover postage of course.

Glad you got it sorted !

Another question - my manual says to set the battery scale to what ever value to trigger the alarm - so i set it to 1000mah for a 5000mah battery. In the manual thats it but on the osd screen there is a value that i can edit next to the battery scale that says 100% do i simply change this to 20% ?
