2.4hgz directional antenna build advice
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:17:33 PM »
Hi chaps
looking at acquiring a 2.4ghz directional antenna of some sort. Not for massinve long range bu for stronger medium range and interference capability.
1) Am I right in thinking that a directional would cope better for example with close/medium range when going around trees and buildings if the signal gets weakened/blocked a bit

2) What would you recommend. I'm happy to have a go at making one, a helical or something perhaps. I have made up some skew planars so would need circular polarisation.

All and any advice, build links gratefully received.

thanks

Let's say up to 2 miles for discussion sake.

Then you won't need directional, you'll do fine with clover/skew combination, though direction or not I wouldn't be going through or around trees at 2 miles out and I probably wouldn't be that low either

For the best opf both worlds get an Eagle Tree "Eagle Eyes" ground station which has diversity and hook up two receivers, one with a helical, the other a skew

ok, thanks CS.  Just improving m ground station stuff to try and go a bit further, be a bit more adventurous and I like the idea of flying around things at closer range and maybe going further. So say a fly around a building like an old tin mine say and not losing signal as soon as I go behind something but maybe with 2.4 that's just going to happen as it can't penetrate well not even close up.

The chances are you will lose the signal behind buildings regardless of what freq you go for!
The old TV frequencies were even lower typ: 700~900mHz ish and you would lose those if the aerial was behind a wall...
