Push rods !
« on: February 03, 2013, 01:36:28 PM »
I am building a new fpv wing and the kit has come with some hd pushrods. What's the best way to fix the threaded ends? They slide on to the pushrods but I'm not sure if I should epoxy or solder ?? Any ideas ?

solder! they are a royal pain in the ass too, I spend 10x more time trying to get the solder looking nice than I do actually soldering them together

Ok so do you 'wick' the solder in or fill the end with solder and push the rod in ?

If they are zinc coated then you'll need to take the ends down to bare metal with some emery paper, next tin the ends of the rod with solder.  If you don't tin the ends then your not going to have much success.
Pop the screwed ends into a blind hole drilled in a block of wood, heat the screwed end with the iron against the side of it and feed some solder into the hole (about 1/4 1/2 full).

Dip the rod end in some flux and place it in the hole, to the bottom, hold the iron there to make sure the solder is fully molten, don't move the rod while the solder solidifies.

Alternate method I've always used is to throw away those rods, get some 2mm or 3mm mild steel rod, whichever size you want to use. Welding rod will do, and thread the ends with a die...
