however.... just out of interest... how can I tell which one is signal or ground? it came with the rangelink set so I didn't make it... the "spilt" is heat shrinked over so I don't know which one comes from the centre of the cable.

can you check with a multimeter?

If you really want to know, use the MM in ohms (or continuity) mode. One probe on the antenna sma nut and the touch the end of the antenna wire with the other probe. If the wire is retracted into the insulation, use a pin to pierce through the insulation! good for finding exactly where an open circuit is  too. Not advisable for high voltage circuits though!

what would the MM show if I "probed" the signal wire?

If one mm probe is touching the sma nut and the other probe touching the signal wire then it would be open circuit reading (infinity), then touching the other element would show short circuit (zero Ohms)

Totally different point but if you want to check continuity of the signal element (particularly after a crash) then unscrew the sma connector and test between the center pin and dipole element for zero Ohms.
